Said he: “You address me, ‘Teacher,’ and, ‘Lord,’ and you speak rightly, for I am such.” (Joh 13:13) As his disciples, these apostles were his learners, or pupils. However, to his apostles Jesus showed that calling him “Lord” involved more than this. While Jesus Christ was on earth, persons besides his disciples called him “Lord,” or “Sir.” (Mt 8:2 Joh 4:11) In these cases the designation was primarily a title of respect or courtesy. ![]() (Romans 15:4) For all the things that were written aforetime were written for our instruction, that through our endurance and through the comfort from the Scriptures we might have hope. Jesus is my Lord and the Lord of all Jehovah's witnesses, and, more important than merely saying so, we prove it by our actions (except that nobody's perfect, of course.) Can't do it perfectly, of course, but, as Benjamin Franklin said, the more you try, the closer you'll get, anyway. ![]() So they have five meetings every week just to learn God's word of truth, the Bible, so they can know it for themselves and try to do what it says. Since Jesus is our Lord, the witnesses take seriously what he prayed to his Father at John 17:17: ![]() And how many people view Jesus as their Lord when it comes to his command to "Go, therefore, and make disciples of people of all the nations.teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you"? Most people are taught that God's reward for the righteous will only be heaven, but didn't our Lord plainly say, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth", too? (Matthew 5:5, the Sermon on the Mount) Most people don't know that Jesus was quoting from Psalm 37 when he said that (maybe 36 or 38 if you have a Catholic Bible), and that later on in that same Psalm it says, "The righteous shall possess the land and dwell therein FOREVER." (Psalm 37:11, 29) Most people just give lip service to Jesus' command to "love your enemies," especially in time of war, but the witnesses look at that as a command that needs to be obeyed all the time. Of course, but more importantly than CALLING him our Lord (talk is cheap, isn't it?) we are taught that, if Christ is really our Lord, then we have to OBEY what he tells us, as our Lord, in the Bible.
